Please find SPONGES and SOFT, PROTECTIVE things to be stuffed into your case.

1. Under the finger board.

2. Above & below the bridge.

3. In between the pegs.

4. In between the tail piece.

5. DO NOT STUFF IT INSIDE THE CELLO!!!

6. Loosen strings before wrapping the cello up.

7. Secure cello inside the case, there should be NOTHING LOOSE inside the case.

8. Secure ROSIN, BOW, TUNER, SPARE STRINGS, MUTE, WOLF TONE ELIMINATOR, STOPPER (and wateva cello accessories have you), so that they DO NOT FLY AROUND IN THE CASE.

9. I'll start assigning the flight and hard cases tomorrow, meanwhile PLEASE PRACTICE!

Hi Cellist,

Ms Natasha Liu is performing with NUS symphony orchestra on 19 Mar at Victoria Concert Hall.

She is playing TCHAIKOVSKY, our favorite composer's ONLY cello work that represents a concerto: Variations on a Roccoco Theme.

Roccoco is a style of music during early europe whereby peasants dance to. In other words, it is like a light-hearted country dance theme which I think most of you will definitely enjoy it. Tickets are $12 each. More info is here http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=247182169774&ref=nf

Hey everyone!

Grats on finishing the concert. I know that vivaldi was, erm not very gd, but the tchaik was compensation for that. Glad that we did not make any obvious mistakes for the tchaik and it was well done. :)

yeah, even if u didnt perform, at least u helped out in ushering and stuff, right? Right? i dunno.. maybe some didnt.

anyway, tmr (monday) theres no practice. oh yay, u may think, but friday theres practice alrdy. and most likely mr. sze will talk (very loudly) about the concert. pls rmb ur mistakes. well, especially basses. haha. yeah, i noe most of us looked up, but dun ask me how we came together wrongly.

BTW if u dun noe wad im talking about, at B, in 1st mvt, we got messed up in the first few bars. that may be because some were not looking up. BUTTT, i repeat, BUT, after that, EVEN THOUGH we got together, we got together WRONGLY. so instead of playing on the second and third beat, we played on the first and second beat. That's why when nicholas came in early, he was actually coming in on the correct beat, but it was because we were all playing early thats why he came in early. luckily the rest of us came in lately on time.

Nvm i bet none of ur dunno wad talking me. anyway, grats on concert! :)

Hi cellist,

I believe by 5th Jan 2010 (Tuesday), most of you would have been back in Singapore.

Therefore, sectionals at 9am to 12pm, as we are going to have practice later on in that afternoon.

And btw, Mr Gordon Siu is coming on the 8th Jan (Friday). So better get yourselves geared up with the feeling of Tchaikovsky. For those interested to get a more detailed analysis of each of the movements, please tag ^_^

Sorry for not posting for soooo...... long. Back!

On Saturday, 12 December, afternoon, our dearest Mr Chan is going to try out an Italian Cello - Montagnana!!!

Some background info about these wonderful cellos: They were made in Italia during the 1700s by Domenico Montagnana. Till now there's lyk over 200+ years old!!! I guess Chan needs to get it waken up before he can bring it to his concert!

And Just a reminder, the camp on 14th to 16 December is a pure DAY camp, no night stuffs needed. (if you want to bring along extra clothings to change after games, go ahead : )

How similar are the sources in telling us how great shen is?

The sources are similar in telling us about the power of shen. Both are similar as they show that shen is great and powerful. In source A, shen "can sightread at actual speed any score of any clef on any intrument, except bass (source: poh zhichao) 神 also has the uncanny ability to play two notes on one string (source: zhang naifu). 神 is also equilavent to one whole celo section (source: Min jun)". Not only that, shen "can sightread the whole william song without any mistakes at all and any loss of rythm" and he "does not mug at all". There are many similarities, however there is not time and space to elaborate the greatness of shen.

In source B, shen can be seen playing the shostakovich cello concerto no. 1 movement 1, a cello concerto which is probably one of the hardest. As one can see, shen has purposely made mistakes in his futile attempt to be like a normal person, when he is actually shen. In fact, with my contextual knowledge, shen has even made mistakes in making mistakes in that he plays all the imba-hard pieces perfectly without even mugging. In support with that, shen will be recording the 2nd, 3rd and 4th movement soon, in order to show his shenness.

These two sources are different as they do show differently why shen is deemed "shen". In source A, shen is merely said to "read any score of any clef" and that "Even if make up a totally new clef i (Zhi Chao) have confidence that he will still sightread it all the same" asides from the facts that have been presented above. However this does not show all of shen's prowess.

In source B, it is merely a video source and is concentrated on shen's playing when he has played the shostakovich cello concerto a few times already (without mugging of course). This source does not show that he can read any clef or play two notes on one string. Besides, it also does not cover fully the power of shen. Even with 1 billion sources, none can add up to shen's power.

Now, we explore the purpose and tone of the sources. In source A, the purpose is to reiterate the ownness of shen even though he has left the cello section (high school). It also serves as a reminder to all cellists to TRY to be like him, when it's impossible to BE him. The tone is one of reverence and awe, as the writer (Zhi Chao) is elaborating on how great shen is.

In source B, the purpose is to show shen's power in playing ANY piece, in which the piece for source B is shostakovich's cello concerto. It is to show his power in playing the cello and probably every instrument that can be created. He probably could even play shostakovich's cello concerto with a double bass that has its strings tuned down 1 octave. The tone, likewise, is also of reverence and awe, as the power of shen is overwhelming.

Thus, both sources have different purpose but have similar tones, as everyone is so stunned by shen's pwnness.

Q: To what extent do you think 神 is imba?

A1: I agree that 神 is imba to a great extent. Run Xian has been widely regarded as the 神, and i have never doubted this fact, which isnt odd and unusual because i was the one who came up with it. However, as time passes, some facts can be proven over and over again andm as our legendary ASL put it, they will become dogmas. Now Run Xian has great talent in sightreading. Well here are some legends which may be true: 神 can sightread at actual speed any score of any clef on any intrument, except bass (source: poh zhichao) 神 also has the uncanny ability to play two notes on one string (source: zhang naifu). 神 is also equilavent to one whole celo section (source: Min jun). I cant think of any more at this point in time, but i suppose that is enough for him to be 神.
Run Xian "is imba" (source: Larry Lau, 3/8/2007), "he can sightread the whole william song without any mistakes at all and any loss of rythm". This fact is further reinforced by my contexual knowledge, that 神 has only been learning cello for 1.5 yrs. Also, it is common knowledge that 神 will be acing the grade 6 cello exam he will be taking next year. From these sources, i infer that 神 is imba.
Now another factor as to why 神 is imba is that he is does not mug at all. This means that 神 has become so pro without mugging, and his sightreading owns even that of me and naifu, who has been learning longer than him. This fact is MUST be true because it is bestowed upon me by 神 personally. Quoting the 神, he practices "half an hour a day". This is very very very very imba, as from what i know, Naifu practices 2 hrs a day (previously during holidays). Also, i know that 神 did not bring his cello back to malaysia to practice during the june holidays, and after he came back, he has become even more pro. This shows us that 神 does not practice much and he is so pro, hinting that he is imba.
Another antecedent as to why Aaron always ketou to 神 is that 神 possesses great sightreading skills and aural skills. 神 can listen to a piece and immediately mimic it in the correct rythm and tempo. He can also read any score of any clef. Even if make up a totally new clef i have confidence that he will still sightread it all the same. This fact must be true because it is acknowledged by the whole string orchestra. Hence i can tell that 神 is imba.
There is no conclusion as 神 is imba and he will forever be imba and well, there is NO opposing view. :P :P :P

note: a simple sentence will suffice for a L6 answer if you ever get this in your tests/exams. the following are a few examples of just-as-perfect answers:

A2: No need to think. We know 神 is imba.

A3: To a large extent, because.

A4: Completely.

Anyway, about the outing that we are going to the national library (in case you don't know, we ARE going to national library). So we better start planning. By right fo shld be typing this cos i dunno wad we are suppose to do...

Anyway, we probably start at lunch? we meet there at like 12.30 or 1 and have cello section lunch. Then, we go to national library to probably go kope some scores. (P.S. steven are the scores there printable and borrowable?) We probably have a break like at 4? I mean, we cant like stone at the library for 5h right.

I apologise.

Well forgive me if I was too fierce during today's orch practice. But please do bear my words in mind. Shen will not be here with us anymore, (except for the upcoming concerts) and that we have to strive to uphold his legacy in the cello section. However, today's behaviour is really a bit out of shape, particularly when Dr. Yeo stop to conduct the violins.

Therefore, a few pointers to take extra note of during future orchestra rehearsals/ practices:

1. DO NOT talk among yourselves unecessarily.

This is very disturbing as all I could hear in front was murmurings and gigglings at the back, which both shows lack of concentration in practice. Hope this will be cut down to the very minimal.

2. DO NOT practice on your own when other sections are playing.

Fingering yes, but please NO pizz or bowing... You should know why. Respect others and they will respect you in return.

3. STOP immediately when the conductor STOP.

This has been a rather irritating thing for the conductors when they face an incooperative orchestra. Continuing to play even when the conductor signals to stop is literally RUDE, showing that we lack in DISCIPLINE!
As most of you know, the Hong Kong conductor will be coming on the 4th of September to inspect on us, and we certainly do wish to leave him a god impression. This is one of the KEY things that we'll have to strive to achieve. I'm sure no one will want to disgrace themselves on an international platform.

4. Stand up to see the bowing/ fingering markings of the stand in front.

From now on, i won't allow any passing of scores to the back, and the whole section should have unified bowing of every possible parts. Whenever there's a need for marking of bowings, please stand up quietly and check the markings of the stand in front.

Efficiency and discipline are the only things I look out for in all of you. So please bear all these in mind, and remind others if they forget as well. (as humans we are prone to forgetting things :) I'll try to post this on the orchestra blog too. Good luck cellist. We're going to have a tough year ahead.

I juz thought i would write some word of appreciation here, for our cello seniors who will be leaving us. T.T

Firstly to the mighty shen, Thank you so much, for being a great SL, leading the section to great heights, forgiving us so much when we misbehave during sectionals. Everything about u, we will miss. From your horny smile when we played murderer during march camp to using ice pack to cool urself. (: ultimately, your title as shen that brings the cello section close tgt. U may not have realised that, but i believe if u nvr existed, the cello section will be a vry disperse section, and with no motivations to constantly improve ourselves. However, all good things come to an end. It's time for u to leave the burden to us, sec 3. Though we will nvr match up to u, we will keep the spirit of cello section alive. Once again, a vry big thanks to you, run xian. You have been a good SL, friend, senior and quartermaster. I believe that we shld all agree, this blog will remain as all hail shen, and shen will be a title for run xian and run xian alone. Run xian, hope to see u in hcse.

To eng keat, well i think u are quite a good senior, helping me with homework quite some time. Your cheeks are nice to squeeze (: Although u tend to be less recognised, i think that, ur passion to hciso, is as strong as any other members. For instance, i can see that, u always place the orchestra in front u, doing ur part in duties before keeping up. And even in your last day, when u shld be enjoying urself, u still helped to keep some stands. Thanks so much (:

To keith. Well, although u dun come for orch frequently, i believe u do have ur reasons. I do see ur efforts in bonding with the section, u try to communicate with us through the section blog and the cca blog. Also, when we were in sec 1, during the EOY camp, when we tried to bond nicholas, u stepped in to stop us. During that time, i view u as a senior, who is quite mature. I wish u gd luck in ur future (:

Finally. to aaron. Thanks so much for helping (and at the same time suanning me, haha) during around may, when i was troubled by her. (everyone noes alrdy anw..) Ur advice and help was greatly appreciated, and so sry for being such a coward durign csm. If not for ur encouragement, i think i would not dare to pass her teh letter. First, thank you all for the support in Chairman Election, I promise to be a righteous and caring Vice-president. Anyway, can we come to an agreement that our cello sectionals will be held on Friday, around 9am to 12 pm? Then we can probably have lunch as a section as well. This applies to ALL HCISO cellist (Aaron if u can please come and help me out as well cuz SHEN will not be there.), including all the sec 1s and, basically, everyone xP.

Any strong, violent, aggressive objections to this date and time please send me a sms at 94669560, or knock me on either facebook or msn (zcbm104@hotmail.com). For those who are unable to make it at the specific timing please do send me your reasons so that I can plan some PRIVATE sectionals with u ^_^.

For sec ones, I will have to grade your homework which is given on last Thursday for Mendelssohn's 3rd movement Minuetto. For others, we will probably be doing Mendelssohn and a bit of Elgar, whereas for EDDY and SEAN (hehehe...), we will be looking through Vivaldi SUMMER ^.^

Dear Shen,

This is the first time we am writing a letter to you. As we are not immortals (someone invincible), there are some things that we want to say but very hard to express verbally. We hope that through these (this) letter the message can be sent across.

First of all, we want to praise you for helping us to be able to survive to the day before SYF. All hail shen!!!!!! The journey for the past 4 months had been a tough but yet a fun one, too. We can see that you have improved in terms of your ownage and holy aura in music and whatever sense. In January, we had doubts that you could even strike someone with lightning. But the number of lightning strikes grew, i can see this special power (No Sarcasm, seriously). You should give yourself a pat in the back.

When we are having sectionals, we tend to get distracted (NICHOLAS! stupid gish). Also, most of us are not that musical in our playing. Thus, we implore you to bestow on us your power to let us be as ownage as rostropovich, yoyo-ma and others. :)

Looking back at the 4 months, we can see that you are ownage when being passionate about playing. However, you might have gone overboard, causing some problems in the death count in Singapore. This is also one of the powers that we did not address. Let's make this clear: When playing, please try to restrain yourself from striking others with lightning. Others people might get injured. Can?

Every week we only have 6 hours or less of rehearsal. You really need our cooperation. You have seen improvement since last year where when Mr Chan is talking and you are meditating. We are sure you can process two info at the same time. Or, for that matter, infinite infos. Time is precious-- Learn to treasure it. Let's hope that in future, we do not need to address this issue of meditating too much again. OK?

We must say that you had worked extremely hard for this SYF. We bow to you for the effort put in. However, as life is never fair, more effort does not always mean more rewards. Even if we get disqualified, we are not interested. We as Cellos section had improved together as one. The unity is what we treasure the most from ensemble. Do you know that we enjoy watching you own everyone at shostakovich's cello concerto no.1? For shen and shen only, your holy aura is part of the presentation. It is not very nice if you suddenly stop playing. Great halos are needed such as an angel's one so that you can become more holy. When you own, the sound would be much better (trust us).

It is fun to work with you, even though there are times that we felt that the section is not being respectful enough. We can never forget the 2 SYF that you had played in: One as last desk, one as first desk. We hope we can keep this spirit up even after SYF. SYF is just a small thing in life of an ensemble. Do not be too upset even if we never achieve what we aimed. Of course, with you, we will always achieve what we aimed so who cares about the last point?

A few last reminders. Wait. Sorry, no last reminders, shen is just too pro.

Once again, thank you for participating in this SYF. I really really thank you for being a yoyo-ma/rostropovich/julian lloyd webber/jacqueline du pre/... in our cello section.

Achievements can never be used to determine one's ability for one's potential is unlimited. This you must constantly remind us.

Hi everyone,

Zhi Chao here. I know many of you are very disappointed with the results of todays SYF central judging... and in fact, many of your seniors still remain bewildered by it. But to all who take time off to read this blog, and do it frequently enough, i hope this post will boost your confidence in hciso today's SYF result has shattered, if any at all.

I have always believed, and i still believe, that in any activity, be it a national competition of great significance or simply a trivial piece of ungraded assignment, to do your best is all that matters. Reason being, regardless of the results obtained, no regret or remorse should accompany an individual who has given his all. What has to be done has been done. There is nothing more you could have done, and therefore you should all feel proud of what you have attained.

Remember, 4 years every member spends in hciso is not in preparation for a mere 2009 SYF central judging. The significance of hciso lies not in the result of a competition, but in its process... the way you guys toil continuously for months on end with a single objective in mind... and the lasting bonds and friendships forged during sectionals or rehearsals... Regardless of the outcome, i believe many of you out there have been brought closer through this experience... and thats all that matters.

When i stepped out of the hall at approximately 5 pm today, it occured to me that we ought to focus not simply on the absolute result obtained, but should also take into account the standard of the competition. Every two years the participating members change... the judges change... and the standard as well. Lets say i've always been getting an A1 for bio, at 80 marks, and all of a sudden the school decides to raise an A1 to 90 marks. Does that mean that my 80 marks, now standing at a B3, is worthless? Pride yourself on the burning passion and determination you have for the ensemble, instead of wallowing in self-pity and sorrow simply because of the flactuating standards of an SYF gold.

I dont know how you guys actually played. Cuz i wasnt there to listen. But i know that you guys started real early, worked real hard, and ought to play real well. SYF is not an end. Its a beginning. May the lessons you have drawn from todays experience accompany for the rest of your life !

I don't want to make this too lengthy here...

I'm sure that all of us are in shock that we got a silver for this year's SYF, which is a great disappointment to our, Mr Chan and our teachers-in-charge's expectations of Gold with Honours.
I believe that all of us have worked hard and put our in best effort, as Mr Chan has said that "we played the best ever".
I feel that this year's silver medal was caused due to unforseen circumstances.
I don't want to blame anyone here, as you people are already hurt enough.

Hello everyone, Titus here. I know you'all are quite disappointed by the syf results, especially that only 1 sch got GwH. However, through the journey to syf,and since its the last yr shen will be wif us, shldn't we thank him for helping us mug through the 4 months as what he says. i dunno whether its really 4 months or not, but nvm. I'm so waiting for edward to type out, but im impatient so...

First of all, I want to congratulate you for being able to survive to the day before SYF. Well Done! The journey for the past 4 months had been a tough but yet a fun one, too. I can see that all of you had improved in terms of your skills and emotional expression in music. In January, i had doubts that we can even get a silver in this year's SYF. But as time passes, i can see this confidence (No Sarcasm, seriously). You should give yourself a pat in the back.

Alwyn and Mr.Chan have been constantly telling us about passion. Some of you may think that they are talking crap. Ok, but I just hope that even if you do not have the passion, at least you enjoy playing the pieces of our SYF. If your aim is only to get GWH in SYF, I think it is going to be very hard for us to get GWH. Like it or not, in SYF there is a section known as presentation. The judges can see that we are faking our expression. Ask yourself, do you enjoy playing music? Whenever we were playing the pieces, I feel like dancing. If i am not playing the cello, I would have stood up and danced. I hope that you can answer this question "What is the music to you?" As long as you have an idea, portray it in your playing. Can?

Looking back at the 4 months, I can see that all of you are passionate about playing. However, some of you might have gone overboard, causing some problems in discipline. This is also one of the failure that I did not address. Let's make this clear: No talking during rehearsals (absolutely), including sectionals. Only interact at break time. Can?

Every week we only have 6 hours or less of rehearsal. We really need your cooperation. I had seen improvement since last year where when Mr Chan is talking and so are you. I am sure you cannot process two info at the same time. Time is precious-- Learn to treasure it. Let's hope that in future, we do not need to address this issue again. OK?

I must say that we had worked extremely hard for this SYF. I thank all of you for the effort put in. However, as life is never fair, more effort does not always mean more rewards. Even if we get Bronze, I am not interested. We as Cellos section had improved together as one. The unity is what I treasure the most from ensemble. Do you know that I enjoy watching orchestra where the bows are well coordinated? For string family, bowing is part of the presentation. It is not very nice if we have one bow sticking out. Great discipline is needed such as looking up at the first desk. When the ensemble is neat, the sound would be much better (trust me).

It is fun to work with all of you, even though there are times that I felt that the section is not well disciplined. I can never forget the 2 SYF that I had played in: One as last desk, one as first desk. I hope we can keep this spirit up even after SYF. SYF is just a small thing in life of an ensemble. Do not be too upset even if we never achieve what we aimed.

A few last reminders. Please listen to the violas at figure 10 of Williams. This is of utmost importance. Also, the hall is going to be super wet. The wetter the hall, the more you have to listen to each other. Do not get tricked by the echo. Always watch the bows of first violins and violas. Lastly, enjoy the music. I will give you a head start of the emotion.

Once again, thank you for participating in this SYF.We have less than 16 hours to go. Wish everyone of us good luck. I really really thank you for being such wonderful cellists.

i would juz like to make a comment. u notice that shen rly moves a lot now. i hope everyone (esp 2nd desk)would exercise ur worshiping skills, and follows exactly as he does, in fact even more than him would be great. eg, if he leans towards the viola, do so as well. it will look like we are a vry togetehr section if we all do the same thing. Some parts to take note would be the tango, PLS DO MOVE JUZ FOR THAT HALF A PAGE. and vibrate if possible. and for 13 of britten, lean towards the section that is making their entry. PLS all of u cna see shen better than me, and if i can follow him, i dun see y u all cant.

4 days, let's chiong towards GwH together. Do not let the day be a regret of our lifetime.

Hello people, hehe following everyone in posting stuff. XD

Anyway, in case you do not know, we had sectionals on sat.

So for the benefit of those who werent there, these are what we did (so that u can mug on ur own) :

A. Williams:
Intonation for bar 1-12 and figure 6.
Being reminded not to rush at 4 before 3.
6 before figure 6 intonation.
figure 7 the place after pizzicato part intonation.

B. Britten:
pizzicato. (the offbeats)
Figure 9 (obviously, the tremolos).
Stringendo or however u spell it at figure 12.
harmonics at last 5 bars, harmonic A. (dont use kaiwen's method, its suppose to ring and not be muted).

Then we practice the bowing (as in bow down (to shen) not bow hair) and all the "icing" as Mrs. Tay put it.

That's all. And pls remember to mug!!! like shen of cos. wait, he doesn't need to mug.

Well, at least aaron says we r gwh standard. so keep it up. at least for those who went for the sectionals.

The recent "outburst" of posts have motivated me to post again~~!!! xD

Okay in case you people don't know what's really wrong with your playing, allow me to attempt to summarize everything:

1.SLURSSSS. Technically it's supposed to be 3 notes 1-2-3... 4~~~~~ (something like that, I don't really know how to explain it online :\) but what I hear is 1-3... 4~~~~ So the 2nd note is missing. Unless I'm mistaken, the 3 notes should be rather equally spaced apart.
2. VIBRATO. Everyone should really do it. Or rather, I should say everyone is obliged to do it. (FYI, obliged is just a very nice way of saying you're forced/have to)
3. SWAY. No pun intended with the dialect meaning "unlucky", but you people should sway with the music. For example, like Steven and Eddy. Just playing the notes is not enough, you must have the "feel" of the music. Often, when it comes to the crunch (I'm referring to schools having close scores at SYF), people who have a better "feel" of the music and thus naturally sway a bit do better. Incidentally, if swaying can give you catastrophic results for your playing, I suppose bobbing your head could suffice. IN TIME, obviously.

And of course I'd hope that everyone would come for the sectionals. (I'm supposing it's not compulsory, in the first place)

And go out for lunch together.

Hi cellists..

I can see that we have improved a lot in terms of playing together, even without shen.. (cos got me mah! xD haha jkjk, is cos have fo (: )this is gd, but of course after playing together, comes stuffs like intonation, and "Step 5 of shen's holy rule": Phrasing.

Shen cannot help u with these stuffs, u need to put in some time by urself, understand the music, and phrase and move according to the music. (but dun move excessively like WTH!) Intonation is also smth in which only practise and more practise can help. 20 more days guys, 20 more days to GwH..

As cliche as this may sound, i put forward to u this: "Do YOU have the passion?". I can safely say, i do. Passion can bring u even further than u imagine.

Ending on a lighter note, i hope we can all make it for the sat sectionals, and i also hope that during the sectionals u all would be more serious, and the usual jokers, pls understand the severity of the current situation. Also, i hope non-syf players can also be present during the sunday reh. Ur support will be greatly appreciated. (:

Ur ASL here...(just in case anyone don't know, I'm Steven)

As Aaron mentioned before, we do need some refinement before SYF rehearsal at Republic Polytechnic on Sunday. Small details such as Williams Solo and Brittan Figure 9 needs to be craved out really nice and neat. Therefore, since we have no orchestra practice on this Saturday, can I appeal to ALL cellist to come for sectionals from the usual practice time of 9am to 11am? This includes sec 1 cellist and the new members as well as Aaron will be coaching all of you some basic stuff or you can just spend the time practicing your lessons. (Dun try to slack, i noe some of you don't practice at home)

Is there any strong or violent objections to my proposal? Please call or message me at 94669560. Maybe after the sectionals we can have section lunch as well. So please respond to this as soon as possible.

I know sone of our new members are working hard, believe me, you will be able to join our orchestra soon and that's when you start learning fast. For the SYF players, good effort put in but we still have much to do. Let's get ourself geared up and ready for the big show on 29th April 2009! Jia you !

Hey guys,

Pardon me this post is quite long i will appreciate if u can read to the end.

Some thoughts after today's rehearsal. I am generally disappointed that ppl still dunno how to behave when SYF is around the corner.

Frankly speaking, today was the first time i see run xian so pissed and emo. It came as quite a surprise, but i can understand his reactions. He is under the pressure of having to get GwH for SYF. HE represents the cello section, any screw-ups on the actual day by cello section, he will be the one to hold the blame for us.

I urge u all to cooperate with run xian. He can be a very nice guy, or he can be a vry nasty guy, but u must noe when to be serious (eg during reh or secitonals), and when to relax and share a joke with run xian or smth (eg after reh, break). Run Xian is our SL, and we shld show him the respect he deserves, esp during sectionals. By showing respect, it means taking the instructions he ask srsly, play srsly, and not talk amongst urself. Not just for sectional; This discipline should apply everytime we have reh or sectionals. So in particular, the back players, pls control urself..

The countdown to SYF has begun. Juz 6 more wks of concentrations, 6 more wks of hard work, we get closer to our goal everyday. isnt GwH wad we always wanted? would u rather work hard now, and come out of SYF with a smile, or slack now and come out of SYF crying, regretting that u didnt work hard enough during the upcoming 6 wks? I am sure the asnwer is obvious. As Mr Chan said, discipline starts now, i trust that u all shld wad to do that is best for the ensemble.

I apologize once again for the serious tone and the long message. Now on to smth lighter :D

We have a 3hrs outing during the camp. I believe that a simple lunch would be way too short to last for 3 hrs. Thus i have a few suggestions:

2) Outing with NY cellists.

anyway, there has been some "quarrel" over seating... so.
The replacements in case those people are not there is in brackets.
e.g.

1st stand: Run Xian (Kai Wen/Edward) Steven (Keith/Sean)
so when run xian isnt here, Kai wen will take his place. :)

2nd stand: Edward (Kai Wen/ Nicholas) Sean ( Ryan / Titus)
If like steven and sean isnt here, then i will take the place la.

3rd stand: Nicholas (Eng Keat / Kai Wen) Titus (Keith/ Ryan)

Btw when the () got a / inside that means if the first person, e.g. kai wen is here and run xian not here then kai wen will take shen's place.
However, if kaiwen and run xian not here, then Edward will take his place. ok?

okay people, i know im nothing near a professional, but after this practice i feel that im obliged to post something, as teh imba honorary 5th-year member of hciso.

(only gna comment on williams though, was *ahem* somewhat distracted during teh other piece)

1. if you people keep this kinda standard up you all are SCREWED. srsly.

2. your bowings should be slightly in sync more. as in, when (e.g.) steven plays a note, after a short while theres a "echo" from somewhere else.

3. intonation!! even if you're too damm tone deaf like me you should still try to be in tune. and tune your instruments too

4. in williams, about 1 line before your solo part in page 2, (dont have the practice score with me so cant exactly tell whr) when you have the tremelos (or whatever they're called) with the accents every 2 notes, you are soft. as in, when the violins spam you can't be heard. i forgot if you are supposed to be pp or ff or whatever, but the point is that YOU CANT BE HEARD. at least from where i am.

5. later in the 2nd page when you have the tango-like part, remember the ritard? (RITard, not RETard) before and after that you people were messing up your timings. as in some were slightly faster and some were slightly slower, sth lidat.

6. for certain individuals (which i kindly not name here), if you cant play, at least fake decently well. such as having your bowing in the same direction, correct posture, playing at the frog or anywhere else WITH EVERYONE ELSE. yea i think you get the general idea.

7. cellos are hesitant. as in, when your solo parts come, even steven lags abit. and the starting sound is abit shaky.

8. i know sectionals and practising at home suck but do you want to:

a) slack through the whole thing and get screwed by mr chan every practice, stay back for separate sectionals like certain unfortunate sections, screw up during SYF, lose the GwH we've been after for so long (hell, maybe we wont even get a damm cert of participation), lose/get less LEAPS points than expected, and in the long run probably screw up your portfolio, or

b) spend, say, maybe 15min at home/at school once every few days (can be before or after practice) to practice? of course don't mug as much as wilfred ngia (if you knew how he mugged), just mug the main few parts where either you suck balls at or the important solo parts of cello section, and maybe not die as badly? or even be so damm good at cello you even go teach cello when you grow up (LOL).

point is, mugging a while wont kill you, but not mugging most probably will, in one way or another.

(even though if i were to play for SYF i woulda dao-ed the points i made myself, but im a different case from all of you. im teh kind of impossible-to-save guy alr)

btw, the wilfred ngia kinda mugging can roughly be understood as claiming to "mug for awhile" and then practice the 2-3 bars you have problems in for 4-5 straight hours.

(disclaimer: above description is, in any way, not an accurate way of gauging the wilfred ngia way of mugging)

even though i suck like nobody else does, i dont play for syf. so you people playing for syf go curse your bad fate or something and try to - whats that word? - incorporate (??) my suggestions/observations

Speed up torrents

Aaron asked for me to post this, so:

1. Cap your upload

Limit your upload speed to approximately 80 percent of your maximum upload rate. You can check your upload speed over here (never trust your isp). Once you know your maximum upload speed, change the max upload (to 80%) speed in your torrent client's preferences.

2. Hack the max TCP connections (Important!)

If you're on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This seriously hurts your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to a high amount of ip numbers. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it also cripples your torrent downloads.
A nice way to fix this is to download this patch, it allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok (I put 512 though.) (more on this).

3. Check seeds and peers

A simple tip, but o so important. Always look for torrents with the best seed/peer ratio. The more seeds (compared to peers) the better (in general). So 50 seeds and 50 peers is better than 500 seeds and 1000 peers. So, be selective.

4. Change the default port. (Important!)

By default, BitTorrent uses a port 6881-6999. BitTorrent accounts for a lot of the total internet traffic (1/3), so isp's like to limit the connection offered on the these ports. So, you should change these to another range. Good clients allow you to do this, just choose anything you like. If you're behind a router, make sure you have the ports forwarded or UPnP enabled.

5. Disable Windows Firewall

It sucks. Windows Firewall hates P2P and often leads a life of it's own. So disable it and get yourself a decent firewall, Kerio or Zone Alarm for example.

6. Net.max_Halfopen (utorrent advanced setting)(Important!)

The default setting in Windows XP for maximum connections is 8 which is not optimal enough for torrents to connect to seeds and peers. The best way to increase the number of half open connections is to increase the value for 8 to 50 to 60, too high or too low will decrease the download speed drastically.

Last but not least… Buy a faster connection…

juz got admin rights, and aaron wanted me to post something, so i am juz gonna crap smth out...

By the holy order of shen, there will be a group photo, which has been delayed since 3rd August 2008..lolol so yar i really hope we can have a group photo xD. I think we should really get people like ryan to come read this blog, in fact every cellists should read this blog, and we can show-off that cello section is the most bonded section in HCISO (ahem bonded as in..friends friends type)!

Hi cellists,

Bet you all nvr seen me posting on this blog b4...so sorry, trying very hard to compensate for that now :)

Yeah and Christmas is just round the corner, hereby wishing everyone Merry Christmas and a great year ahead. Our concert with NYSE has proven successful and some, or i should say most of you have show significant improvements. Nevertheless, there's still room for some, especially the back desks, to prove that each and everyone of you is great musicians and that we will break the historical record of attaining Gold for SYF.(I bet all of u shld know what i mean...)

Some of you may say that i'm too ambitious, sometimes even too strict an assistant section leader, but all i'm trying to get across is that the cellists in HCI string orchestra should stay bonded and united as a section and work towards our goal, our dream which has yet to come true. So in the coming whole new year, let's strive together and achieve what we havn't, soar the heights we couldn't before. Some advice here to start the new year of practises:

1. Be heard, Rather than be Seen!
This advice applies to almost every cellist, excluding our holy shen whom we are worshipping in this section blog right now, and of course some spammers xP. Some of you at the back, not meant to be personal attacks, really needs to practise more. Why? Because the sad truth is, we ought to be heard as a section in unity in order to show to the others that we are good. Or else what do you think everyone sitting out there are listening for? Whether the sound is together or in a mass and whether there's the element of emotions inside our music. So, to make us a "good orchestra", we have to sound together, at least in unison. Then, we can make great music.

2. Understand, Feel and Express the music.
The second element peeps out there are listening to is the musical quality in our sounds as well. Take a good look at the music scores and observe closely every single detail on the score, including a staccato dot and a minor accent. All these wouldn't have been there for nothing, they are all required in the setting up of the general atmosphere of the music, as mentioned by our conductor, Mr Chan. Any doubts or parts which needs clarification, or uncertain of how the particular phrase should sound like, all of you can always ask me or our Shen for enlightenment, or, if you are daring enough, ask Chan about it. Really, it's up to us to shape or distort the music itself.

3. Loyal and Faithful to "Shen"
Yeah,c'mon , go ahead and pay your respects to shen as, well, he's the Section Leader, and that we have to follow him closely, regardless of the length of bowstrokes he use or minute details like vibratos. I'm not asking everyone to mimic shen until we are all photocopies of him, but at least there must be an effort made to follow our leader, who will guide us through all the three pieces and, the Judgement Day itself.

All the abovementioned points are just my points of view and hopes for our cello section. Anithing that all of you have comments on can tell me personally, or any improvements that we need to make. Of course, all these are meant to start after the Christmas break lar...dun get so tensed can? RELAX for now and let's all work towards a great year ahead! :)

As you all know, combined concert is coming VERY SOON
So please practice the Brandenburg Concerto unless you want to let yourself get screwed by Sze or the NanYang girls - especially Titus/Nicholas :)

Ps. Practice on Friday (12 dec) starts at 9am (i think) till 6pm.
- 0900-1200 combined, 1300-1800 SYF (smth like that)

Hi cellists,

Since i'm feeling a little bored doing nothing at home, i would as well post something. First of all, GOOD JOB everyone! Exams are over. The final countdown has ended. No matter how well or how badly you have done, everything has ended, so stop worrying and look forward. Put everything behind you, relax, stone, and think about what you are gona do in future. [Apart from those of you who still have MSP, SMRP, homework, lessons, and whoknowswhatyouhaveleft.] Have fun, but dont forget about how to make next year a better year, by starting on projects, ace, cip, hciso.... and whoknowswhatyoustillhave.

Orchestra has re-started, and i suppose Mr chan will spend a long time talking to you about random stuff the next time he sees you. So those ppl at the back remember to switch off your PSPs and handphones and listen to him. You dont want him to suddenly point at you and ask you to give your opinion. :P Oh and please start practicing. A few months of no practice has reduced me to errrr .... lets just say as good a violist as i am a cellist, or somewhere along that line. So if you guys still wana play well for the EOY camp and nxt year's SYF, you better start practicing real hard. PS. It isnt a nice feeling to get owned by your stand partner [if you dont get what i mean, ask around].

Maybe someday we can organize some cellist outing... cum phototaking. Apparently the photo we were supposed to have taken on 15th july seemed to have vanished... along with the idea of doing so. Perhaps we can get our SL to start by reading this blog and telling us to go somewhere in the holidays. Dont forget to invite your seniors along as well. :P

Short updates

Hi cellists,

Run Xian got 134 for his grade 6 exams. Distribution is as follows: A 24, B 26, C 28, aural perfect score, scales 18, SIGHT READING 20/21. :) Told you his sight reading was imba. Today afternoon Run Xian was telling Mr chan that he had "something interesting" to share. Guess what, Mr chan replied: "You failed your exams?" lololol. And Mr chan was saying, "Hmm your vibrato is warm?" [or something along that line]

Oh and please work hard. I'm not as sanguine about the current situation as violists are. Personally i think that if you guys are going to improve at this rate gold with honours will be well out of reach. Oh and can someone coach the sec 1s. I can do it ocassionally when i see them, but wouldnt it be better if others can also render help when i'm not around...

*** Oh and Run Xian you might like to get a list of blogs [to add to the links section] and a list of emails and msn addresses as well.
